SUMMARY:40th Annual Skaneateles Antique and Classic Boat Show
DESCRIPTION:Each summer during the last weekend in July\, the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society invites wooden boaters from across the United States and Canada to gather at the north end of Skaneateles Lake for the annual Skaneateles Antique and Classic Boat Show. Skaneateles Lake is one of the eastern lakes of the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York and provides an elegant backdrop for this annual antique wooden boat show. \nCome enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and more than 80 antique and classic boats\, both on land and in the water. Boat owners begin arriving in Skaneateles on Friday morning. Many boats are mahogany runabouts manufactured by Chris-Craft\, Hacker\, and Garwood during the early 20th century. Other eye-catching boats in the show will include launches\, sailboats\, canoes\, rowing craft\, and race boats – many restored to their original condition. Antique inboard and outboard engines are also frequently displayed by collectors. \nClift Park on Skaneateles Lake\, Skaneateles\, NY \nhttp://www.acbs-flc.org/ \nhttp://www.skaneateles.com/visit/boatshow

SUMMARY:R2AK: Race to Alaska
DESCRIPTION:The inside passage to Alaska has been paddled by native canoes since time immemorial\, sailing craft for centuries\, and after someone found gold in the Klondike the route was jammed with steamboats full of prospectors elbowing each other out of the way for the promise of fortune. \nIt’s in the spirit of tradition\, exploration\, and the lawless self-reliance of the gold rush that Race to Alaska was born. R2AK is the first of its kind and North America’s longest human and wind powered race\, and currently the largest cash prize for a race of its kind. \nThe race has two stages:\nStage 1: The Proving Ground \nPort Townsend to Victoria BC (40 miles)\nR2AK  starts with an initial race across open water\, two sets of shipping lanes\, and an international border.  The first stage is designed as a qualifier for the full race and as a stand-alone 40 mile sprint for people who just want to put their toe in. Stage one winners get to bask in the glory for a full day and a half. \nStage 2: To the Bitter End \nVictoria\, BC to Ketchikan\, AK (710 miles)\nRacers start in Victoria at high noon on Sunday\, June 17\, and continue until they reach Ketchikan—or are tapped out by the sweep boat. Other than two waypoints along the way\, Seymour Narrows and Bella Bella\, there is no official course. To quote the bard\, You can go your own way. \nIf this sounds like your brand of whiskey\, R2AK is the race for you. \nThe application for 2018’s race is now open. You should do a couple things first: \n\nRead the Participant Qualification.\nRead the Rules.\n\nAnd we’ll close the doors to applications on April 15\, 2018. Apply now. \nNorthwest Maritime Center\, Port Townsend\, WA \nregistration@r2ak.com ~ https://r2ak.com/

SUMMARY:The Texas 200
DESCRIPTION:The Eleventh Annual Texas 200 June 11 – 16\, 2018\nThe Texas 200 is a “Raid”-type event; that is\, it involves a scheduled gathering of small boats traveling more or less in company from Point A to Point B over a period of several days\, camping along the way.  The Texas 200 goes through the Laguna Madre and the bays of South Texas for five to six days and about 200 miles. Shallow draft boats will have options in terms of routes through the bays\, while deeper draft vessels will spend more time in the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).  For any who may be unfamiliar with the ICW\, it follows the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from New Jersey to the southern tip of Texas\, providing a more or less protected waterway of canals and bays for commercial barge traffic\, an alternative to open ocean shipping. \nWhat the Texas 200 is:\n• A “rolling messabout” where people bring boats of all shapes and sizes and sail them on the south Texas coast.\n• A moving\, exhausting\, endurance test of boat\, captain\, and crew.\n• A chance to see areas of America rarely visited by man.\n• An exercise in planning\, preparation\, and problem solving.\n• A chance to make new friends and legends of the small boat world \nMore information: http://www.texas200.com/

SUMMARY:Meet at the Beach: A gathering of kayak builders
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Beach: A gathering of kayak builders \nAn annual gathering of kayak builders and like-minded individuals at Bluff Point State Park. This is a fun gathering which gives us all a chance to meet other builders and paddlers and talk shop a bit. People generously let others try out their boats. A total of about 50 boats show each year. It is great fun to see the variety of designs and techniques used. There is everything from very traditional skin-on-frame Greenland style kayaks to innovative new skin-on-frame hybrids\, as well as strip-built and stitch-and-glue. \nThe gathering is free and open to all. It is held in sheltered waters which are suitable for beginners and novice paddlers. A short paddle brings you to the open waters of Long Island Sound. People will start showing up around 10 a.m. and stay until they are tired. You do not need to bring a boat. The event happens rain or shine. \nIf you have any questions please post them to the Kayak Forum.

SUMMARY:OkoumeFest 2018
DESCRIPTION:Chesapeake Light Craft will present its 20th annual small boat rendezvous\, OkoumeFest\, on Friday and Saturday\, May 18-19\, 2018. \n“Okoume” is the plantation-grown African hardwood used in tens of thousands of CLC’s build-your-own-boat kits. OkoumeFest features an open house with technical seminars on Friday at the CLC plant in Annapolis\, and on Saturday an on-the-water rendezvous at Matapeake State Park on Kent Island. This event is RAIN OR SHINE. Please note that if thunderstorms are detected nearby we’ll bring the boats off the water. \nThe Friday seminars are informative and fun\, but the highlight of OkoumeFest always comes on Saturday\, when we bring virtually everything in our shop over to the beach at Matapeake for our friends to paddle\, row\, sail\, and generally put through their paces. We also encourage fellow boatbuilders to bring their homebuilt watercraft to show and compete for best-in-show honors and various awards. \nOkoumeFest is also a special chance to try some of the boats\, such as PocketShip\, that they can’t usually take on the road with them. You’ll also be able to try out new designs\, such as the Jimmy Skiff II\, Tenderly XP\, and the Waterlust Sailing Canoe. Attendance is free on both days this year\, but please RSVP so that CLC can plan for the hordes. \nFriday [schedule] features an open house at the CLC factory with shop tours\, boatbuilding seminars with experts\, and a cookout. Everything in the CLC store will be discounted\, including boat kits. \nOn Saturday [schedule] the event moves to Matapeake State Park on Kent Island\, where nearly 60 CLC boats will line the beach. They welcome you to try out boats all day long\, or bring your own to show off.
