SUMMARY:FIRST Dutch Wooden Boat Festival
DESCRIPTION:FIRST DUTCH WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL to be held in Den Helder DEN HELDER \nOrganizer\, boatbuilder\, and boat school instructor Bert van Baar will be holding the first-ever Dutch Wooden Boat Festival in summer 2019 together with Jet Sluik\, organizer of the Traditional Boat Show. The show will be at Museumharbour Willemsoord in Den Helder\, a former navy yard\, now a yacht basin and cultural center. \nThe festival opens on Friday with the annual Helderse Botterrace that is held on the Marsdiep\, organized by the Helderse Botters Foundation. The festival also coincides with Jutterharbour Days on Saturday and Sunday\, organized by Willemsoord Company\, with museums and entrepreneurs in the harbor participating. \nBoats will on display in the water\, on the quays\, in the Medemblikker warehouse\, and in and around the former mast warehouse (Building 66). In the harbor\, the following boats are confirmed for attendance: HD2 and RD28 from Den Helder\, sailing lugger JAMES HAYLETT\, three-masted barque EARL OF PEMBROKE\, sailing traders TRES HOMBRES and NORDLYS\, minesweeper HOOGEEVEEN\, the Danish mail boat LEPRECHAUN\, a Thames Wherry\, a Norwegian Oselvar Fearing\, and\, in Dock 1\, sailing steamship ship BONAIRE. In the Medemblikker warehouse\, WINDVINDER\, an experimental model for an unmanned sailing ship\, will be on display. \nThe program includes presentations from boatbuilders\, including instructors from the Hout & Meubilerings College in Amsterdam\, where they started their yacht building programs 25 years ago. Participants from the Amateur Boatbuilding Awards (ABBA) 2019 will also present. There are demonstrations of steam-bending\, blacksmithing\, sail making. Visiting boats will be offered a free berth in the museum harbor after registration. \nOrganizer Bert van Baar\, who runs the Boat Building School at the Willemsoord complex and is a teacher boatbuilding at the Hout & Meubilerings College in Amsterdam\, says\, “Because in several other countries Wooden Boat Festivals have been successfully held for years\, this was a reason for me to organize  something similar in the Netherlands\, where wooden boats have been built for 10.000 years!” \nJet Sluik adds\, “The Dutch Wooden Boat Festival fits in seamlessly with our desire to maintain traditional shipbuilding. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 11th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.\, join the Buffalo Maritime Center Foundry for an evening of making\, drinking\, and fun! Participate in an aluminum casting event while creating your own low-relief sculpture. Participants will be provided with instructions on what to do\, tools to scratch\, and what is called a scratch block mold. \nScratch block molds are a resin bonded sand mold with a blank “face”. They are sort of like a blank canvas\, but for hot metal! Every participant of this event will be given their own scratch block\, shown how to create an interesting image on it\, given examples on what a successful sculpture created in this method looks like\, and be allowed to sip on beer and wine in the process! \nOnce completed with your scratch block you will be able to see it poured with hot metal right before your eyes. SUMMARY:Maine Small Craft Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Maine Small Craft Celebration will be a two-day event held on the shores of the Fore River in Portland. Occurring during the autumnal equinox\, the MSCC will provide participants an opportunity to celebrate the end of New England’s boating season as we start dreaming and planning for next year’s boat\, upgrade\, or adventure. \nExhibitors will have small boats (sail\, oar\, and power) on display in both water and on land. Demonstrations\, workshops\, and lectures will be given throughout the event focusing on building\, maintaining\, and safely operating small boats. \nThe most unique feature will be on the water where visitors can “Try it—Like it.” Designers and builders will be there to discuss and demonstrate the features of their boats. Visitors will be able to take them for a test “drive” after learning the particulars about that craft. \nThere will also be boat races\, easily viewed from shore\, demonstrations on rigging and rowing techniques\, and boat tours of Portland harbor. Back on land there will be a large exhibitor’s area. \nA juried boat contest\, a nautical flea market\, and a children’s marine craft area are being organized. DESCRIPTION:The New England Junket will happen this year on Labor Day weekend\, in Gouldsboro Bay\, Maine. This is a gathering of Junk Rig Association members and others who sail junk rigged boats and/or are interested in junk rig. Emphasis is on sailing together and visiting\, in the context of sharing information and interest in junk rigs. \nAccommodations: Protected anchorages are nearby and a small number of moorings are available. Camping is available about 3 miles away at Mainayr Campground\, which boasts tidal access to Joy Bay\, at the head of Gouldsboro Bay. There are two nearby boat ramps\, one tidal\, the other deepwater and paved. One is on Joy Bay\, and the other on the west shore of Gouldsboro Bay\, just south of the narrows into Joy Bay. \nGorgeous sailing is to be had in Gouldsboro Bay and outside of it to the east and west. DESCRIPTION:Portland Wooden Boat Festival celebrates the final day of a Family Boat Build weekend\, sponsored by RiversWest Small Craft Center\, Oregon Maritime Museum and the Willamette Sailing Club. The event\, which takes place on the banks of the Willamette River\, will celebrate twelve families and teams\, each building a Salt Water Bay skiff\, with mentoring from expert wooden boat builders. Saturday the teams meet and receive their kits of supplies and commence building. Sunday they will launch their finished boats. \nCALL FOR WOODEN BOATS:\nOn Sunday the festival includes a display of wooden boats from local boat builders and owners. Space is available on the grounds for canoes\, kayaks and boats on trailers\, as well as dock space for larger vessels. There is no charge to display a boat\, but you must be registered before the event. \nOTHER ACTIVITIES:\nIn addition to the boat displays\, the Wooden Boat Festival offers free sailboat rides and the use of paddleboards and other small craft\, plus information about Portland’s maritime history.
