SUMMARY:Small Boat Festival - pacific northwest
DESCRIPTION:This event will showcase 75 outstanding small boats in the water and an additional 25-30 on dry land. The dates are July 26-27 at Port Ludlow Marina on beautiful Port Ludlow Bay just 13 nautical miles south of Port Townsend. With terrific views of the Olympic Mountain range\, and protected waters\, the bay is perfect for a small-boat gathering—and as a bonus\, we have secured virtually all guest-moorage slips in the marina\, assuring that we’ll be able to display a wide range of small-boat designs along one contiguous dock\, and in one upland area close to the boats that are in the water. \n \nDuring the SBF\, participants with in-the-water boats will be free to row\, sail\, paddle\, pedal or motor their boats around the bay…offering rides if they wish\, or having their boats photographed for a video documentary by Off Center Harbor\, the Maine-based production company. \nWe’re already planning for a few areas of special focus: Electric small craft and human-powered small boats\, so there will be areas set aside for those boats and some presentations made on subjects like the increasing practicality of electric power; comparisons between rowing\, paddling and pedal-powered small craft; and tips on how to get beyond day use and start camp-cruising your smaller boat. \n\nShow off your boat\nEven though nearby Port Townsend hosts its big annual Wooden Boat Festival\, the SMALL BOAT FESTIVAL will absolutely not be limited to wooden boats. (Focus of the event will be on attractive and functional designs\, so we expect a lot of older fiberglass production sailboats\, along with homebuilt wooden watercraft. Everything from SCAMPs to slippery full-keel classics; and from rowing\, paddling\, pedaling and engine-powered boats to SUP’s\, canoes\, custom kayaks and other small watercraft.) \nBoats will arrive at Port Ludlow on Friday\, July 26\, and the SBF will take place all day on Saturday the 27th\, with the public invited to attend between the hours of 10 and 6. Registered skippers and their crews will enjoy dinner in the marina’s huge Pavilion tent Saturday evening\, along with terrific raffle prizes and visits from some luminaries in the world of small boats. \nReady to register?\nRegistration fee for the two-day festival will be $75 which includes \n\nin-the-water moorage or dry-land display\nthe Saturday evening dinner\n\nIf you have a small boat we’d love to have you show it at the festival. Fill out the registration form and the organizing committee will get in touch with you to work out final details. \nPlease note that you’ll need to be signed into a Google account (gmail\, youtube\, etc) in order to fill out the form – that helps us keep down the internet riffraff. If this poses a problem for you\, send us an email at pnwpocketyachters@gmail.com. \nFurther details\nTrailer launching options\nLaunching trailer boats isn’t possible inside Port Ludlow Bay\, but there are a number of ramps in the area—the best being the paved all-tides ramp at Port Townsend’s Boat Haven Marina. \nBoats can also be launched at: \n\nthe Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock (7.2 nautical miles north of Port Ludlow)\nthe Mats Mats Bay ramp (4 nautical miles to the north)\n\nOvernight parking of tow rigs is very limited at Port Hadlock and Mats Mats Bay\, and no empty boat trailers can be parked at Port Ludlow Marina\, so the best bet might be launching in Port Townsend and cruising south to Port Ludlow on Friday…or even turning the transit into a slightly longer mini-cruise by—(just for instance)—launching in Port Townsend on July 24\, overnighting in Mystery Bay on nearby Marrowstone Island that night\, then Mats Mats Bay the second night (Thursday the 25th)\, before arriving at the SMALL BOAT FESTIVAL venue by Friday afternoon\, July 26. \nCheck out time from Port Ludlow\nCheck-out from SBF moorage slips will be noon on Sunday\, unless individual boat owners wish to stay longer\, paying regular guest-slip rates to extend their stay. If skippers wish to display an additional boat\, either in the water or on land\, a reduced $50 fee will apply for the second small boat registered.

SUMMARY:Atlantic Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Every two years\, a dozen nations convene for a friendly competition and cross cultural gathering were crews showcase their seamanship skills in a series of rowing\, sailing\, docking\, knot tying and navigation events\, and build friendly ties with the international crews.\n\nBeyond on-the-water skills\, the Contest will further global understanding and build friendly ties internationally. is one small way we can help move quarreling humanity toward a path of cooperation and peace. We believe getting young people together in boats\, learning difficult manual skills\, competing for shared success and living and eating together for 12 days has the power to transcend cultural\, political and linguistic barriers. Indeed\, this is the basis for the development of trust\, connection and friendship.\n\nContestants are young adults: all crew members must be over 15; at least half will be under 22. \n\n \nThe Contest events take place in the Bantry Bay gigs\, which are copies of 18th-century French Navy Captain’s gigs. These vessels are 38ft long and are powered by three sails and ten oars. Each nation has their own vessel for the contest. \nLance Lee\, of Rockland\, Maine\, co-founded the Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship with Bernard & Michelle Cadoret\, of France in 1984 as a way to bring young adults of different cultures together while also preserving traditional seamanship. The first two gigs Liberté and Egalité were built at the Rockport Apprenticeshop\, in Rockport\, Maine and the first Contest was held in New York City in July 1986. \nMore than 80 gigs have been built by 16 nations for participation in Atlantic Challenge. Typically 12 nations gather for the biennial Contest of Seamanship. \nThere has been a Contest every two years from 1986-2018. Atlantic Challenge USA is hosting the 2024 Contest.

SUMMARY:Dutch Wooden Boat Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2024 we will do it again and again at the same time as the Jutterhaven Days. Those who ‘didn’t know anything’ about the previous festival and were a bit surprised: put on your brave shoes and COME! Above all\, feel welcome! \nOur new Festival will also take place at Willemsoord in Den Helder. \n  \nWhat is the Dutch WoodenBoat Festival? \nThe Dutch WoodenBoat Festival was first held in July 2019 as a Dutch festival for wooden boats. \nThis festival is not only an ode to the centuries-long wooden boat building tradition that boosted our economic development\, but also to the warm feelings that many enthusiasts get when they see… \nWhat is there to do? \nSeeing and ‘experiencing’ wooden boats and everything related to them; meeting like-minded builders and paddlers\, admiring all the beauty on and out of the water; exhibitors with various products related to wooden ships; presentations\, speakers while enjoying food and music.\nThere is an ABBA\, the Amateur Boat Construction Award. A boat is even being worked on. The boat building schools do demonstrations.\nWe want a second hand market on Saturday\, model builders at the weekend\, youth activities? \nIn addition to this festival\, there are also the Jutterhaven Days on Saturday and Sunday: a nice market with old crafts\, street theater\, music\, catering\, a nice initiative by Willemsoord BV. \nFriday starts with the annual Botterrace\, for the 15th time in 2024. Check out the Heldersebotters.nl website \nHow can I register? \nIt is a low budget event\, but participants with a boat or companies that want a stand must register by sending an email to bert.van.baar@kpnmail.nl. \nVisitors have free access everywhere\, along the quays in the halls\, the workshops and they can possibly visit the ships after approval by the owner.

SUMMARY:SCALLYWAG CAMP 2024
DESCRIPTION:SCALLYWAG\, John Welsford’s newest creation\, will be the second group build and again perhaps the fastest way to get on the water regardless of your boat building skill level. Be one of the first to build SCALLYWAG with the assistance of the designer and Howard Rice. Both gents are highly skilled and you will not only have their undivided attention as you build together but you will also have the chance to drive away with a highly accurate hull to finish. Then help from these two doesn’t stop there\, online support\, phone video discussions are part of our commitment to help you get on the water! The build will take place in the Great Lakes at a boat shop on an 80 acre estate with housing for builders just a stones throw away. Contact Howard at thepocketyacht@gmail.com\, thepocketyacht.com \n  \nLodging\nThe build site is on an 80 acre private home estate and our hosts offer their home for builders. There are three bedrooms available so please let us know if you would like one. There is also superb camping on site and both instructors plan to camp. If you wish to pitch a tent let us know. The bathroom\, kitchen and shower facilities in the house are shared by everyone. \nWhen\nSCALLYWAG Camp is scheduled to begin at 8am on Monday morning June 24th\, and concludes mid day on July 5th. Builders are welcome to move their tools into the shop on June 23rd between 12 noon and 5pm. Lodging will be available starting June 23rd.\n \nWork Days\nThe build begins on day one with a short orientation session to help familiarize each builder with the build process and management of the shop space. Each work day will begin at 8am and end at 5pm unless we are having too much fun and decide push on into the evening. Lunch is an hour at noon. Each lunch break will be an opportunity for the group to engage in a small boat chalk talk by the build instructor pertaining to the boats being built\, small boat use or other related topics\, which builders request.  \n** Birds Mouth Mast Option **\nOne of the elements of the SCALLYWAG build that seems a bit daunting to builders is the construction of a hollow\, tapered birds mouth mast. Last year before the 2023 SCAMP Camp the option was offered to produce masts during the Camp by working some evenings. As it turned out everyone enrolled selected the option and masts were built during the build. This option is being offered again in 2024 at a cost of $950. This cost covers the cost of materials including Sitka Spruce\, epoxy\, fillers and the instructors time. By any measure it is a bargain. Please select this option if interested as materials need to be sourced prior to the build. \nBoat Trailer\nYou will need to bring a trailer for your new boat. It is suggested that a galvanized steel boat trailer is the most economical and actually perfectly suited for carrying your new boat. Any trailer with adjustable fore and aft bunks will work. A trailer with a long tongue makes it easy to back up while launching and retrieving.

SUMMARY:2024 Sucia Small Boat Rendezvous
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Sucia Small Boat Rendezvous will be held at Sucia Island State Park on July 12-14\nThis year marks the 21st anniversary of this annual Rendezvous\,  established in 2003!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKnown as the crown jewel of Washington State’s marine park system\, Sucia is almost the most northerly island in the San Juan island archipelago. It offers several bays for anchoring\, and several camping areas. Echo Bay on the east side offers docks and is popular with big boat sailors\, but this rendezvous is planned for the narrow strip of land separating Fox Cove from Fossil Bay on the southwest.  We will be using Fossil Bay unless a strong south-easterly wind makes it uncomfortable – it has the better beach for landing on. There are mooring buoys and two docks as well\, but these cannot be reserved and may be full\, so be prepared to anchor if you don’t want to beach your boat.  Fox Cove is an excellent place to beach too\, with a large shoreline almost entirely clear of rocks\, but the cove is a bit shallower and has less room to anchor. \nThere are campsites close to the beach\, and plenty of them all over the island.  The prettiest sites face Fox Cove and Fossil Bay.  We try to grab what we call “The Campsite” (campsite #15) at the back left corner of Fossil Bay to serve as our gathering place\, especially for evening campfires. If the first person to arrive could please claim The Campsite\, that would be great (campsites are not reservable).  Tent campers typically share the campsite.  We’ll have a fire in the evenings so bring along your sticks and marshmallows. You’re not camping if you don’t have burned sugar on your face! \nComposting toilets are located close to the campsites – these are clean and virtually odor free. There’s good water on the island but no garbage disposal — be prepared to take it home with you. \nWe have informal potluck gatherings around dinner time at the campsite (or at the picnic shelter if it’s available) and\, if the usual light winds and strong currents cooperate\, we will attempt a Round-the-island “race” Saturday at noon.  This is a unique race in that A) it’s not really a race and B) we never seem to make it completely around the island.  Those are the only two things that may distract from the main attractions\, which are mingling\, relaxing and enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Sucia.  The hiking trails and views are spectacular.  Wildlife abounds.  Orcas\, pelicans\, sea otters\, sea lions\, blue herons\, dolphins\, harbor seals\, deer\, bald eagles\, and gray whales have all been observed.  Explore the sandstone caves.  Look for fossils at Fossil Bay.  They’re easy to spot.  They date back 80 million years to the late Cretaceous era\, when dinosaurs ruled the world.  We found an Ammonite fossil last year.  Take a little side trip to explore nearby Matia or Patos island.  Or just relax. \nThis is a Rendezvous\, not an organized event. It is not sponsored or supported in any way by anyone.  Anyone with a “small boat” is invited to attend.  There are no signup sheets or dues.  Nobody is in charge of this rendezvous.  Your safety and well being\, and that of your passengers and crew\, is entirely your responsibility\, just as it always is whenever and wherever you operate your vessel.  Seek advice if you’re unfamiliar with sailing in these open waters. \n\nFor more info or advice: \nhe SSSBS groups.io message board:  https://groups.io/g/sssbs \nThe Port Townsend Pocket Yachters Facebook page \nMore information about Sucia at the Washington State Parks website. \nRead about Galen Piehl’s visit to Sucia.  Be sure to watch the video! \nSandy Point Marina – a nearby boat launch.  Caution: entrance to the marina is shallow and narrow with swift currents.  Best used at high slack tide.  Don’t even think about it at low tide. \nBellingham boat launches \nIf this Rendezvous  excites you\, check out our sister rendezvous – the Montague Harbour Rendezvous

SUMMARY:Texas 200 Race
DESCRIPTION:The 17 th Annual Texas 200 will be held from June 10-14\, 2024. After a number of years doing a 6-day event\, this year we’re going to do this thing in 5 days. Our theme this year is “Back to Basics”. Nothing fancy. No gimmicks. No alternative routes. No new camps. Just five solid days of sailing with new friends and old\, to a set of tried and true camps that have all been used on this event several times. \n The Texas 200 is a “Raid”-type event; that is\, it involves a scheduled gathering of small boats traveling more or less in company from Point A to Point B over a period of several days\, camping along the way.  The Texas 200 goes through the Laguna Madre and the bays of South Texas for five to six days and about 200 miles. Shallow draft boats will have options in terms of routes through the bays\, while deeper draft vessels will spend more time in the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).  For any who may be unfamiliar with the ICW\, it follows the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from New Jersey to the southern tip of Texas\, providing a more or less protected waterway of canals and bays for commercial barge traffic\, an alternative to open ocean shipping. \nThe Texas 200 was established by Chuck Leinweber\, founder of the Duckworks website https://www.duckworks.com/.  Chuck competed in the Everglades Challenge (EC)  several years ago\, and wanted to do more of that kind of thing.  The Everglades\, however\, are a long trip from his home in Texas.  Chuck thought he could organize a modified version of the EC\, right on the Texas gulf coast. \n  Kim Apel “A Californian Does the Texas 200”  \n What the Texas 200 is:\n• A “rolling messabout” where people bring boats of all shapes and sizes and sail them on the south Texas coast.\n• A moving\, exhausting\, endurance test of boat\, captain\, and crew.\n• A chance to see areas of America rarely visited by man.\n• An exercise in planning\, preparation\, and problem solving.\n• A chance to make new friends and legends of the small boat world\nAndy Linn “Texas 200: Embrace the Suck” \nThe 2024 Texas 200 will be held the second full week of June 2024\, which means a start date of Monday\, June 10th.   Additional information including the start point\, finish point and all camps\, will be published on our website on or about January 1\, 2024.

SUMMARY:R2AK Race To Alaska
DESCRIPTION:RACE TO ALASKA EXPLAINED\nStage 1 Race start: Sunday\, June 9\, 2024\, 5:00 AM\, Port Townsend\, Washington\nStage 2 Race start: Wednesday\, June 12\, 2024\, High Noon\, Victoria\, BC\nApplication Open: Wednesday\, November 15\, 2023 at noon\nApplication deadline: Tax Day baby! April 15 \n  \nThe inside passage to Alaska has been paddled by native canoes since time immemorial\, sailing craft for centuries\, and after someone found gold in the Klondike the route was jammed with steamboats full of prospectors elbowing each other out of the way for the promise of fortune. \nIt’s in the spirit of tradition\, exploration\, and self-reliance that Race to Alaska was born. R2AK is the first of its kind and North America’s longest human and wind powered race\, and currently the largest cash prize for a race of its kind. \nThis isn’t for everyone\nIt’s like the Iditarod\, on a boat\, with a chance of drowning\, being run down by a freighter\, or eaten by a grizzly bear. There are squalls\, killer whales\, tidal currents that run upwards of 20 miles an hour\, and some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. \nThe hardest kind of simplicity\nYou\, a boat\, a starting gun. $10\,000 if you finish first\, a set of steak knives if you’re second. Cathartic elation if you can simply complete the course. R2AK is a self-supported race with no supply drops and no safety net. Any boat without an engine can enter. \n \nContact: info@r2ak.com

SUMMARY:Swallows & Amazons - Open Boat Event
DESCRIPTION:Our premier open boat event for everyone\, now in its 25th year! Join us once again at the Walton & Frinton Yacht Club to race around the Island\, and explore the backwaters.\nThis year we are extending the event to three days. High tides are: Friday 13:08\, Saturday 13:51\, Sunday 14:51. Sailing will start on the Friday for those that can make it\, with a race round Horsey Island on Saturday\, weather permitting. On the Friday or Sunday\, again weather permitting\, we might creep up Bramble Creek to say a quiet hello to the seals. Join on Thursday evening to make the most of the three days!\nTo mark our 25th year\, Tessa Hodgkinson has written a lovely history and description of the event as it has evolved over the years: \nThe annual Swallows and Amazons Race is a delightful celebration of the diversity found in small Gaffers\, the sailing adventures of the Walker & Blackett children\, the wonderful back drop of the Walton Backwaters and of course\, the ever forgiving\, ever clinging Essex mud. \nIt all started some 35 years ago when Jon Wainwright and Brian Hammett started a “race around the island” for the smaller boats and dinghies at the Shotley Classic Boat Festival in 1989. It proved very popular with all the open boats and even some smaller cruisers\, so eventually it broke away to form its own weekend event. The title of the weekend seemed an obvious choice\, paying homage to Arthur Ransome and his inspirational books about the youngsters\, delighting in their adventures and their freedom with their small gaffers in these very waters. \nIn the early 2000s we were regularly hosting 40 to 50 small boats at Swallows and Amazons\, it was often the largest East Coast event. The boats were a wonderful collection\, including real classics over 100yrs old\, ex fishing boats including Lune whammels\, winkle brigs\, smacks boats\, barge boats\, whalers\, also racing dinghies\, 1920s one designs\, dinghies and self-built boats\, and they came from all over England and Wales in a spirit of goodwill and fun. \nSaturday was race around Horsey Island\, launch as soon as there is water and try to get back before the mud reappears. There were always adventures and spills\, dinghies full of families and dogs\, some definitely had pirates aboard\, some pausing to seal watch and others offering tows to those becalmed without an outboard and needing a helping hand home. \nBeing a race\, of course\, there are prizes\, but having such an eclectic fleet\, handicapping is virtually impossible\, so we made many classes\, many prizes and a rule that each boat could only be awarded one prize\, to share them around as much as possible and encourage all. \nSunday is fun day (just in case the race was not fun enough) we have had dinghy treasure hunts\, sail in company to a picnic spot\, visit the actual Swallow Island (by landowner invitation)\, seal trips and exploration into the furthest\, shallowest backwaters. \nAs the years have gone by Swallows and Amazons has reduced in size\, but the spirit of fun and inclusivity remains\, prizes for all and never more than one each. There is an increasing fleet of east coast smacks boats that regularly support the event and all small gaffers and assorted classics are very welcome. Come by sea or land\, enjoy the secret waters and friendly pirates\, watch out for seals and mastodons … they can all be found here.

SUMMARY:Rockland Yacht Club Scholarship Regatta 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Rockland Yacht Club’s (RYC) annual Scholarship Race will take on a new dimension in 2023 by partnering with the Sail\, Power & Steam Museum to help raise funds for educational opportunities for youth sailing programs in Midcoast Maine. Scheduled for August 19\, 2023\, all yachts are welcome to participate. If there are sufficient competitors\, there will be three divisions (class splits will be determined on race day) including  spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes. One-design classes are encouraged but must have at least three boats entered to be scored as their own class. This event will help to raise funds for the next generation of sailors to get out on the water and learn the joys of seamanship for free.\n\nThe yacht club will be open at 9:00am on August 19. There will be a skippers meeting at 10:00am at the RYC Clubhouse. The first warning signal will be at approximately 11:30am.\n\nThe starting line will be located outside of and to the southeast of the Rockland Ferry channel in Penobscot Bay and indicated by the RYC Race Committee boat. Courses will be described in the Sailing Instructions and at the Skippers’ Meeting at 10:00am at the Rockland Yacht Club. The final course will be determined by the Race Committee on the day of the race and announced at the Skippers’ Meeting.\n\nThe event will be followed by an Awards Ceremony and lobster bake/BBQ overlooking South Rockland Harbor at the Sail\, Power & Steam Museum starting at 5:30pm. Music\, food\, drinks and beautifully crafted awards will be enjoyed by competitors\, crew and guests as the sun sets over the harbor. Additional prizes will be awarded to the boat raising the most funds for sailing scholarships.\n\nParticipating boats are encouraged to raise additional funds to add to scholarships for youth sailing programs. Team pages can be created via GoFundMe’s non-profit program\, making online fundraising easy and seamless.  Boats unable to participate in the regatta can still raise money via the Virtual Class  which has been created to allow any boat or team to participate.  Prizes will be awarded to the boats that raise the most money during the regatta.\n\nRegistration is required at regattaman.com for all boats. The registration fee will be $100 prior to August 9\, 2023 and $125 thereafter. In addition\, each boat is requested to raise funds via a GoFundMe approach to help support youth sailing programs in the Midcoast region.  Prizes will be awarded to that boat that raises the most funding.  Team pages will make online fundraising easy for captains and crews.\n\nFor more information on the race\, visit regattaman.com or https://www.sailpowersteammuseum.org/regatta.html.\n\nContact:  \, Robin McIntosh\, robin.sailpowersteam@gmail.com or 207-596-0200 (office)/ 603-502-5923  (cell) OR Marti Mayne\, 207-650-1741 or maynely@aol.com
