This 16 1/2′ x 19″ Greenland-style kayak frame was built by Christopher Cunningham, author of The Greenland Kayak: A manual for its construction and use, editor of Sea Kayaker magazine from 1989 to 2014, and editor of Small Boats from 2014 to 2024. The kayak frame was built in the early 2000s as part of a collaborative piece with Seattle glass artist Mary Van Cline and was shown at the Leo Kaplan Modern art gallery in New York City. The frame is made of aspen wood for its light color and smooth grain. It was never intended to be skinned to make it a kayak for paddling. The construction follows traditional methods. Each of the lower stem pieces and include a length of the keelson and are joined with a hooked and nibbed scarf. The two-part gunwales are joined with hooked scarf joints with bird’s-mouth nibs.
